I say this as someone who is currently listening to Disclosure’s debut album, Settle. I find myself truly quite annoyed that the duo who are so quick to slam ‘shit chart garage stuff’ have produced a whole eighteen track album consisting pretty much of the same sounds, and using the same appeal of what they apparently detest.
I’m fed up of hearing musicians shit all over the genres, or even a previous movement within a genre only to happily bask in all of the fame and glory of rehashing those very same dynamics, sounds and popularity. Is ‘Sweet Like Chocolate’ a monument to music, no. But do you know what, most of the people listening to Disclosure now will have some memory of it being played on the radio back in the 90’s. What about all of the other ‘chart garage stuff’, eh? Because I kid you not, Disclosure, that if it weren’t for the popularity of that music (and it is popular, otherwise KISStory would definitely not be a thing, and a local nightclub where I live would definitely not have had Livin’ Joy play there recently), the dynamics and the sounds of electronic music we know today would be entirely different.
I am not saying Disclosure has to ‘like’ this music, no. The issue is that what Disclosure are producing and releasing is not far off from the music that they are more than happy to shit all over. The legacy of 90’s UK House and Garage has inspired this throw-back sound which has exploded into the scene.Where does this leave Settle? Well, with all of its ‘pop’ dynamic, and use of those exact same sounds and energy of the House and Garage music of the 90’s , it’s not any different, except we now happen to be in 2013.
Do I dislike the music that Disclosure make? Not entirely, no. But I do loathe their attitude. They have made a success of themselves through another bandwagon in the dance music genre, and not only that, they have made a success off the back of music that continues to sell and play very well. When their music is still played in twenty years time, maybe I might revise my opinion, but we’ll have to wait and see if their even still relevant in six months’ time first.
These guys most definitely do not have my respect.
